Bagshawe Cavern
The scouts ventured all the way into Derbyshire to have a half day at Bagshawe Cavern.
An
ex-show cavern it is ideal for first time cavers with challenges for those feeling
daring and for those that are not so.
A total of eight scouts made the one hour journey to the caves with two hours down
the cold, damp, wet, muddy, creepy... caverns.
Although we had one leader down due to being ill the scouts still enjoyed a good half
day trip.
As the weather was so hot everybody stopped to in the park to have their sandwiches
and we then continued back, in the sunny weather, back to Mansfield.
The event should all help towards the scouts badges and a big thankyou to all that
stood at late notice and organised it.
Next is the traditional water fight to end the scouting calendar for the summer break...

Master Chefs!
After 3 years of entering the annual District Cooking Competition 2nd Mansfield Scout
Troop finally defied all odds to win (and with a comfortable margin).
The cooking competition was held at Robin Hood Campsite on a lovely sunny Saturday
where a total of six scout teams took part. These included two teams from 2nd Mansfield
and four from 4th Mansfield Woodhouse. This was improved on last years number of teams.
Organised
by the Mansfield & District Scout Fellowship, the aim of the competition is to
cook a three course meal including one hot course for £10. The teams were only allowed
four members and were limited on the total age of the team. No help was allowed by
leaders and the whole event was judged to find out the best team for the Mansfield
district.
There was a variety of meals created and all were done to a very high standard. Example
meals ranged from noodles to garlic mushrooms, curry with a kick to meat balls and
for dessert pancakes to a strawberry cheese cake. The 2nd Mansfield Scout teams produced
some lovely food, brilliantly presented and managed to seal 1st and 2nd place with
the following places going to the 4th Mansfield Woodhouse teams.
1st = 2nd Mansfield A (69.5 points)
2nd = 2nd Mansfield B (65.25 points)
3rd = 4th Mansfield Woodhouse (60 points)
Congratulations to both the 2nd Mansfield teams and also to all the teams that competed.
Thank you to the Mansfield & District Scout Fellowship for organising the day
and hopefully we can enter a team for next years competition who will retain the title.
Well done to the Scouts…

Cub Camp 2006
During May the Cub Pack went on their annual cub camp.
This year they decided to go to Blackwell Court, near Birmingham. This took place
over the bank holiday weekend in May. A total of 10 cubs attended the camp which was
all the pack.
Activities over the long weekend were swimming, climbing, a day visit to West Midlands
Safari Park, grass sledging, and many more.
The weather was not the best that we have had in previous years but all that went
thoroughly enjoyed the camp and are looking forward to next year.
Thankyou to the leaders and all cubs for making it such a good weekend.

A Roller-Coaster of a Weekend
During November the Scout Group had the opportunity to attend Chessington World of
Adventures on a weekend away. A total of 8 scouts came along with support from the
regular bunch of leaders. Being one of only a few groups from the County going along,
places were like hot cakes and soon filled up.
Friday
night saw a long journey down to Wycombe where the scouts stopped over at a youth
hostel sampling the delights of 'Pop Up Pirate', 'Othello' and other games scattered
around the hostel.
Saturday was the main event with a day trip to Chessington World of Adventures where
the scouts enjoyed roller-coaster rides on the Dragon's Fury, Vampire and more wet
rides like the Dragon Falls and Billy's Whizzer. The main surprise was stumbling across
the Chief Scout, Peter Duncan, which made some people's day (see picture).
On the Sunday it was a long journey back to Mansfield where the scouts hope for another
weekend as fun packed as this one (maybe somewhere different next year).

Too many cooks…
…don't spoil the broth for 2nd Mansfield. The annual district cooking competition
was held recently at Robin
Hood Campsite, near Ravenshead. With a total of four scout teams and one explorer
team competing in the cooking competition it looked to be an enjoyable but competitive
event.
The
aim of the competition was to cook a three course meal including one hot course for
£10. The teams were only allowed four members and were limited on the total age of
the team. No help was allowed by leaders and the whole event was judged to find out
the best team for the Mansfield district.
There was a variety of meals created by the hard working teams and all were done to
a very high standard. Example meals ranged from prawn cocktail to melon, stir fry
to a lovely sausage & vegetable stew (made by our team) and for pudding pancakes
to a cheese cake, created by the eventual winners from 4th
Mansfield Woodhouse. All the teams had a great time and received the cooking badge
for competing in the event. The 2nd Mansfield Scout team produced some lovely food
and were very close to winning it.
Well done to the winners, 4th Mansfield Woodhouse, and also to all the teams that
competed. Thank you to the Mansfield & District Scout Fellowship for organising
the day and hopefully we can enter a team for next years competition.
