About Us

The Group was started on the 12th January 1910, three years after the foundation of the Scout Movement by Lord Baden-Powell. The first Scout Group in Mansfield known as 1st Mansfield was at the then Wesleyan Chapel on Bridge Street (now the Bridge Street Methodist Church).

Initially the 2nd Mansfield Group had only a Scout Section (the Cub Scout Section of the Movement did not start until 1916). The Scout headquarters were at Grove House, Brunt Street, the Scouts meeting upstairs over the Institute room. Grove House, which was adjacent to the Parochial Hall, was owned by the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Mansfield.

The Group developed to include Senior Scout and Rover sections. Later on the Scout Association discontinued these sections and were replaced by Venture Scouts.

Canoeing

In 1978 the Scout Group now consisting of Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venture Scouts, a total of more than 100 moved, to new headquarters in the Parish Centre (in the building, which had originally been the Mansfield Boys Grammar School). The Centre was adjacent to the Parish Church.

There is no complete record of the leaders of the various sections within the Scout Group. It is, however, known that the following were leaders in the Scout Section: Bill Adcock, John Tomlinson, Bill Platts, Leslie Marriott (Bill and Leslie both also ran the Senior Scout Section), Michael Hewkin, Terry Chapman, Roger Marriott. The Troop is now led by Keith Morris.

Even less information is known about the leaders of the Cub Scout Section but the following have been leaders: Mrs. Parkes, Joyce Harby, Hilary Briggs. The leader is now Margaret Pate.

The first Venture Scout Leader in September 1973 was Harry Whitehouse. When Harry moved the Unit closed but was re-opened early in 1998 with David Wilkinson as Leader. The position is now vacant.
